On Friday the 19th of June 2015 Stephanie Kleine, as European Coordinator of URSA MAJOR, was invited by the Italian motorway operators to visit two Italian sites of URSA MAJOR which are under deployment. The deployment sites are located in Verona (TICC of Autostrada Brescia-Padova) and Campogalliano (new ITP of Autostrada del Brennero).
The BS-PD TICC is the center managing all the equipment and systems for traffic monitoring / management and traveler information along the A4 Brescia-Padova and the A31 motorways, in particular those implemented and still in process of implementation under the URSA MAJOR workplan.
Further to the usual operators activities an unusual event took place during the visit, when the car escort of Mrs. Michelle Obama passed this section on their way from Vicenza to Venice. Due to the special arrangements the maximum level of security for such a travel could be ensured and showed a very real case of TICC involvement (temporary closure of entrance stations, continuous video-surveillance, VMS warning, ad hoc platoons, etc.).
In Campogalliano West, along the A22 motorway of Brennero, a previously small parking area has been enlarged to provide now parking spaces for 79 HGVs. The deployment is still ongoing to ensure a better safety, security and a more efficient use of the facility due to the usage of video-surveillance, access/exit control and slots availability counting, electric powering, etc.
This ITP facility is one of four within the URSA MAJOR corridor planned by Autostrada del Brennero to meet the very strong need for truck parking during the entire year, as also presented at the ITP Workshop in Prien am Chiemsee on March 2015 (see EasyWay/URSA MAJOR website).
Both site visits helped the European project Coordinatiors to form an opinion about the techniques used and the progress of the implementation.
